Yuko Permanent Hair Straightening - FAQ

What is Yuko Hair Straightening?

Yuko is a chemical process that alters the keratin bonds in the hair to create a permanently straight structure.

How long does the Yuko hair straightening process take?

It takes between 3–6 hours, depending on your hair type, length, and thickness.

How long does Yuko hair straightening last?

Hair treated with Yuko remains straight almost permanently. However, new growth will appear in its natural texture. I recommend Yuko touch-ups every 6–12 months, depending on your hair’s growth and texture. Brazilian Blow Dry touch-ups are also recommended for regrowth to avoid over-processing with chemicals.

How soon after having Yuko hair straightening can the hair be washed or get wet?

You can wash your hair 2–3 days after the treatment. Blow-dry it in a downward direction to maintain smoothness and shine.

How does Yuko hair straightening work?

A chemical solution breaks down the hair’s protein bonds. After rinsing, a protein-based pre-treatment fills in any gaps, and a flat iron is applied to reshape the hair permanently. A neutraliser then locks in the new straight structure.

Is Yuko hair straightening safe?

Yes — if carried out by a qualified professional. There are no fumes, only the mild scent of the chemicals used.

Will Yuko hair straightening damage my hair?

As with any chemical straightening process, correct application is key to achieving the best results. Depending on your hair’s natural texture, minor breakage can occur due to the weakened structure caused by the treatment.

Does Yuko hair straightening work on any type of hair?

No, it’s not suitable for afro-textured hair. Yuko achieves the best results on virgin or minimally processed hair. I strongly advise against Yuko on bleached, highlighted, or over-processed coloured hair — a Brazilian Blow Dry is a safer choice in such cases.

Can I have Yuko hair straightening and colour at the same time?

No — colour your hair at least two weeks before or after Yuko. Doing both treatments too close together may cause damage.

I have had a different brand of Japanese hair straightening before. Can I still have Yuko done?

If the previous treatment used the same chemical base (Ammonium Thioglycolate), Yuko can usually be applied safely. However, if your hair is badly damaged or the prior treatment was poorly executed, Yuko may not fully take effect.

I have had a relaxer, Brazilian, or Keratin treatment before. Can I still have Yuko?

If you’ve had an afro relaxer, it must be completely grown out before having Yuko. If you’ve had a Brazilian Blow Dry with me, Yuko can be applied safely. However, not all keratin-based treatments are compatible with Yuko.

Do I need to use special hair-care products after the Yuko treatment?

Yes, I recommend using a sulphate-free shampoo, a nourishing conditioner, and an occasional hair mask to keep your hair hydrated and prolong the smoothness. I’ll advise you on the best options for your hair type.

How is Yuko Japanese hair straightening different from Brazilian Blow Dry?

Yuko permanently restructures the internal bonds of the hair, while Brazilian Blow Dry temporarily coats it with proteins for a smoothing effect. The Brazilian lasts 3–5 months, while Yuko’s results are permanent on the treated hair.

Can I get Yuko hair straightening done at home?

Yuko can technically be done at home, but because the application process requires precision and professional timing, I strongly recommend having it performed in a salon.
